How do hormones work?
Nowadays, it’s no secret that working too much or having a job that’s too stressful, with too much pressure and tension, can manifest into physical and/or mental illnesses.
In fact, our brains are not very good at distinguishing between stress caused by real danger (an imminent physical threat) and danger that is only perceived (for example, pressure or tension at work).

In the face of real danger, such as a fire or a gun to the head, the brain releases hormones and chemicals that speed up our heart rate, increase blood pressure and stimulate our muscles. 💓
But don’t be alarmed—it’s a good thing! It’s a defense mechanism to make us more alert and reactive, so that we can react to danger.
The problem is that our body can’t endure this level of readiness for long periods of time. After a while, it starts to fail.
This can result in physical symptoms that can manifest regularly—not just on holiday—such as frequent headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, or serious disorders like a heart attack or stroke.
So if your work is damaging your health, you must take intentional steps to fight stress and improve your body-mind balance. 🧘🏻♀️😌
7 tips to avoid the “holiday sickness”
A strong immune system depends on paying attention to both your physical and mental health.
If you take better care of your immune system in the weeks leading up to a vacation, and avoid being in “Energizer mode” too long 🔋🔋🔋, it could make a big difference on how you enjoy your break.
Don’t give up, resist!
1. Discover the source of stress: the first step in managing stress is to find out what’s causing it: is it work overload, problems with colleagues, an overly demanding boss, the pressure of tight deadlines? The ups and downs of teleworking or the chaos of commuting or rush-hour traffic? 🕵🏼♀️🔎
If you discover the source of your stress, it will be easier to take steps to solve the problem.
- Set priorities: feeling overwhelmed by a long list of tasks “due for yesterday” creates stress. Make a list of tasks and order them by urgency and importance:
- prioritize the most urgent tasks early in the morning, because you’re more rested but not yet 100% awake;
- then move on to the more complicated and demanding ones, because you’ll probably already be at the peak of your energy;
- take on the easier and shorter tasks towards the end of the day, because by then you’ll be tired.
- Don’t forget to take breaks: stopping is not a sign of laziness or neglect! On the contrary, relaxing for a few moments allows you to recharge your batteries and reduce stress, so that you can concentrate again and be as productive as when you started the day. Take a 5-minute walk, drink some coffee or tea, or do some meditation.
- Talk to your colleagues and boss: stress may just be a communication problem. Talk respectfully and empathetically about deadlines, avoid misunderstandings in writing, etc.
- Manage your time well: plan your time in advance and make sure you meet your deadlines—use a notebook or a calendar application such as Google Calendar. Avoid multitasking, as it will increase stress and decrease productivity.
- Take care of yourself: self-care is essential to fighting stress. Eat a varied and balanced diet, exercise or go for walks and dedicate enough time to your family and friends.
- Learn to say “no”: we often try to avoid disappointing friends, work colleagues and family by putting ourselves in situations we don’t want to be in. Unfortunately, this can lead to overwork and stress. Learning to communicate your limits and desires is an effective way of avoiding pressure. Remember that while it’s important to cultivate good relationships at work, it’s also essential to maintain a healthy distance in order to preserve professional relationships. 🌟
